Meet Your Expert Hostess: Jean McDonald!

Jean McDonald’s journey as an educator began in 1990, starting with 3rd-grade classrooms and progressing to teaching middle school math and Spanish. Today, she passionately guides individuals of all ages and skill levels in the art of quilting, turning creativity into breathtaking works of art.

Her quilting adventure also took flight in 1990, inspired by Eleanor Burns on HGTV. Although her first log cabin quilts turned out smaller than expected—thanks to a dressmaker’s 5/8” seam rather than the quilter’s ¼”—Jean embraced these early lessons and soon began teaching friends how to craft their own log cabin designs.

By 2008, designing quilts had become a key part of her journey. She launched her first Block of the Month in her Maryland studio, empowering students to bring their quilt visions to life. An added benefit for her students? Jean’s expertise extends to finishing their masterpieces on her longarm quilting machines. Now based in Topeka, Kansas, she runs several quilting programs, including multiple Blocks of the Month, a Runner Club, various classes, and a thriving longarm quilting business. Her vibrant studio is split into spaces for quilting, classes, and sew days, creating a hub for creativity and learning.

Jean also coordinates quilt retreats every year, where her motto—“There’s Gotta Be an Easier Way”—inspires attendees from over 10 states and Canada. These events are more than just opportunities to learn new techniques; they’re a chance to forge friendships and accomplish incredible projects.

A seasoned longarm quilter since 2003, Jean averages over 600 quilt finishes for others annually with her hand-guided and computer-guided machines. Her passion for quilting is deeply rooted in her family: her father’s love for puzzles and her mother’s eye for beauty influenced her path. Jean’s unique talent lies in solving creative challenges to make quilts not only perfect but truly stunning.

Join Jean for an inspiring journey where passion meets precision, and creativity knows no bounds! 🌟🧵✨
