How to Design Your Very Own Quilt - Quilt Designing

This is a brand new class!

Do you want to use traditional quilt blocks, or other geometric designs? Do you want to add
simple applique or elegant designs to make your quilt “statement”? Do you want to go with
borders or borderless - square, rectangular or asymmetrical? Do you want to do something
pictorial with actual photos or something a little more surreal? Using your computer for the base
design, I will guide you in how to section or break the design down into doable pieces and help
you create your very own unique quilt, based on your desires and tastes.

The possibilities are endless. You will go home with a wealth of designs for future quilts.
The first day, we’ll choose one from our designs to turn into a quilt and refine the pattern. The
subsequent days, we’ll start the quilt, choosing fabrics and construction techniques as we go.

NOTE: Don’t worry about whether you’ve designed a quilt before or not, including the
construction techniques - I will teach you everything you need to know. We’ll also discuss all of
the possibilities so you can make your quilt as you wish.

What you need to bring:
● Your personal Laptop or iPad, power cord(s), and if you offload your files to an external
harddrive, bring that too. (You’ll want to save your designs)

● Your computer device needs to be able to connect to WiFi, have a browser for research,
and a Microsoft app (free!) which I will tell you to download and add to your device prior
to the workshop. I would tell you which one now, but the app might change between now
and when you need to have it on your device (new ones are being released all the time -
and I want to make sure that the one we choose will be easy for you to navigate).

● Resources for pieced blocks, if you want to incorporate those into your design. We will
be able to hook up to Wifi, so you’ll be able to do internet searches to find any quilt block
designs, shapes to create applique, artistic styles and everything you need at your
fingertips. If you’re going to go pictorial, you want to have the photo uploaded to your
device.

● Notes for any prompts that you might want to use, and Annie will have plenty with her to
help you begin your designs. (Color choices, artistic style choices, time period, etc - don’t
worry a whole lot about this one. I’ll take you through some exercises so you can see
what your choices can be)

● A package or roll of Clover Wonder Fuse fusible web if you know you’re going to want to
add applique to your quilt (or if you prefer hand applique, whatever tools you use for
applique)

● Notions kit (pins, scissors, etc.)

● Drafting paper with a grid, and plain drafting paper (there will be plenty, so don’t worry
about bringing your own in case we run out – we won’t!)

● Pencil and permanent pen

● A modular ruler

● Creative Color Wheel

And additional resources that Annie will bring for inspiration.
