Every quilter thinks that they have a problem with color and they second-guess every fabric choice they make.

Did you scroll through the pictures on this listing? Would you believe that those quilts each feature just ONE QUILT BLOCK? The same block is repeated throughout the quilt, but shows completely different from one another depending on the placement and color of the fabrics used. THIS IS WHAT THIS RETREAT IS ALL ABOUT! Learning to make fabric and colors work together to make the block speak the story you want it to tell!

This three day workshop will arm you with the techniques and instruction to build your own color sense and enhanced knowledge of how to choose the fabrics for your quilts. Whether you're a traditional quilter or modern quilter, you'll improve your skills and sharpen your eye.

Learn exactly what draws the eye to interesting designs and patterns in quilts to give them life. We discuss keys to effective fabric selection in this workshop; you’ll learn to apply design rules to choose fabrics for quilts, enhancing your own color and fabric intuition. The days are structured with layer upon layer of useful technique-building.

We begin with a no-sew day; a slide show about quilts and color standards, a hands-on demo where we play with fabric, and students build paste-up pages for a resource binder that you will use over and over again.

As you become more comfortable with your choices, we’ll choose ten* fat quarters for a quilt using one block pattern that will transform before your eyes. Quick cutting, block designing and precision piecing with one little magic tool will amaze you and strengthen your skills.

Annie will bring a trunk show of quilts that are each made with the foundation of Color Sense, no matter what the style of quilt (pieced, appliquéd or garments!)

She’ll have a library of quilt block designs for you to use for inspiration while you’re designing the blocks for your quilt.

Quilt finishing and best practices will also be a part of the instruction so you’ll receive every bit of information that you need to finish your quilt.

Pattern only for retreat $17 (payable upon arrival at retreat)

Optional kit of fabrics for no-sew portion of workshop, AND pattern: $35 (payable upon arrival at retreat)

*The ten fabric quilt will create a nine block (3x3 layout) quilt which is about 54” square. If you want to make a larger quilt such as a twelve block (3x4 layout), fifteen block (3x5 layout - twin size), sixteen block (4x4 layout), twenty block (4x5 layout - queen top) or thirty block (5x6 layout - king), you have that option. You will needas many fabrics as blocks you will make — example: sixteen blocks take 16 fat quarters. Suggestion: purchase the fat quarters while you are here so you can implement the knowledge you have aquired in choosing which will be best for your finished product.

MEET ANNIE

I'm a Professional Quilter by career definition. Whenever anyone asks me what I do for a living, that's my answer. The next thing they ask me is how much I get for my quilts - assuming that I sell them. When I tell them that I don't sell what I do, you can see the confusion in their eyes - but then I tell them what defines what I really do. I’m a:

  • Quilt Imagineer
  • Quilt Instructor and lecturer
  • Designer and pattern publisher
  • C & T Author
  • Producer of online classes
  • Quilt Judge
  • BERNINA Ambassador
  • Aurifil Aurifilosopher
  • Cherrywood fabric Ambassador
  • Creator of "Quilting Stash", the first podcast for quilters.

You could say that I wear several hats.

My life is pretty much quilting; all day, every day. It's not a stretch to say that I'm consumed with everything having to do with quilting. I love everything about quilting - the machines, the fabric, the patterns, the books (oh - I'm especially obsessed with quilting books!), the shows, the notions, the threads, the techniques, but mostly - it’s the people I meet.

A life-long Californian, I now live in Texas with my family and love the “buckaroo” culture. I have ten grandchildren and a golden retriever named Posey.
